Shabbat morning learning for K-7th grade, 9:30am-11:45am
Our Shabbat morning children’s program creates genuinely experiential learning for our children, bringing our entire multi-generational community together, and conveying to our kids early on that Shabbat, synagogue, Jewish learning, and community go together. We believe that the creative constraints of Shabbat help form a container for the specialness of the day - on Shabbat morning, we don’t write, do crafts, or cook, for example. But that doesn’t hold us back! We pray, tell stories, sing, do improv, debate, read, and play lots of games. Our goal is for our children to feel the ways in which Shabbat is a special day, for them to develop a sense that Or Hadash is their special place. At the end of the morning, many families stay for our community kiddush lunch, giving children and parents time to relax, chat, play, and build friendships.
Additional midweek learning for 3-6th grade
To build strong Hebrew skills & even stronger friendships, and to bring a wider range of weekday activities like art and cooking into our Jewish learning, our our 3-6th graders learn with us twice a week. In 2022-23, families have two options for mid-week study:
Hebrew and Chugim: Wednesdays at Or Hadash, 5:00-6:30pm. Children have afternoon tefillah with Rabbi Lauren, group Hebrew learning, and an elective of their choice. Elective choices rotate quarterly, with options like Food & Cooking, Music, Art & Makers, and Games. Each quarter, we will focus on one content area that all of the electives will engage, such as Fall holidays, Shabbat, Israel, & Tikkun Olam. Students will be in the same elective for 6-8 weeks and then will have an opportunity to choose a new one.
1:1 virtual mid-week Hebrew: For some of our students, group learning on Wednesday evenings simply isn’t realistic. Whether because of Atlanta traffic or late afternoon overwhelm, students who can’t attend in person can elect 30 minutes of 1:1 Hebrew over Zoom in place of Hebrew and Chugim.
